If you’ve had T1D for any length of time, you already know a healthy A1C is one marker of overall health. One simple way to reach your blood sugar or A1C goal faster: be more aware of your blood sugar trends throughout the day.
When I work with clients on lowering their A1C, one of the topics we always talk about is how to accomplish their goals in a sustainable, healthy, and non-judgmental way.
Tracking and knowing your daily trends can be tough for many reasons, including the fact that you already have a busy life! But in addition to that, often there can be implied or explicit judgment associated with blood sugar readings.
We self-label or have been told that certain blood sugar readings are “good” or “bad.” We feel we “deserve” a certain outcome based on our actions.
This approach can result in avoidance and putting off checking at all. What we don’t know can’t hurt us, or so we like to think!
If fear of a good or bad blood sugar outcome is holding you back from checking your trends as often as you would like, consider a shift in mindset.
Instead of seeing your reading as a “report card,” try to look at it with curiosity. Think of it as a piece of data you can use to inform future decision making.
The outcome? Just increasing your awareness of your blood sugar patterns will build confidence and boost your ability to be flexible. It will also support a goal of lowering A1C!
